She further said that the state government is committed to shielding all Abia girls from sexual exploitation and other types of violence.

Speaking on Sunday in the state capital of Umuahia, the First Lady expressed her sadness that some evil people were busy abusing helpless girls for their own gain, while everyone else was getting ready to celebrate the 2024 International Women’s Day Celebration.

“I am deeply saddened by the discovery of a baby factory in Abia State,” the speaker declared. It is depressing to learn that certain people are attempting to sabotage our attempts to highlight the valuable contributions made by Abia women on a day when the world honors the extraordinary accomplishments of women.

“We strongly denounce the presence of baby factories in Abia State, where young girls are coerced into becoming pregnant, abused, and have their children forcibly removed in order to make money. These girls’ lives and general wellbeing are in jeopardy because of this heinous practice, which exposes them to major health risks like HIV and other STDs.

It’s clear that these evildoers take advantage of this vulnerable group’s poor economic circumstances and inadequate education, which increases their vulnerability to manipulation.

“Since the beginning of the current administration, we have been committed to providing these girls and young women with skill acquisition training because we are aware of the challenges they face.”

“She pledged that her office would continuously offer training opportunities for girls until they are able to work for a living and are strong enough to avoid temptations to have children for financial gain.”

Mrs. Otti reaffirmed her pledge to work with the appropriate government agencies to hold those responsible for the abuse of Abia girls accountable. She also reminded the perpetrators and their sponsors that their actions are not an investment in women, but rather a threat to womanhood, culture, and our generation.

She went on to say that the government would not permit criminals to thwart efforts being made by all of them to create a respectable state that would favorably use the abilities of Abia women.

She urged the people of Abia to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity to the state Ministry of Women Affairs, the Gender Based Violence office at the Office of the First Lady, or the police.

The Abia State Police Command, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Mr. Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, was also praised by the First Lady for their professionalism and quick thinking, which resulted in the girls’ rescue and the apprehension of certain suspects.

Remember that early on Saturday morning, the Police invaded an Aba infant production building based on intelligence. While eight kids and sixteen pregnant girls from the neighboring state of Akwa Ibom were rescued, a few culprits were taken into custody.

Five pregnant women were saved from a baby factory in the Ogbor-Hill neighborhood of Aba, Abia State, by the Abia State Police Command in August 2016.

A 54-year-old man named Nkem Nwokocha and his wife, known only as Nurse, were also taken into custody by the police. They were purportedly the proprietors of the baby factory.

Additionally, six pregnant teens were freed from a “baby factory” in Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area, in February 2024 thanks to an operation by the Anambra State Government and security personnel.

Following the raid, Dr. Afam Obidike, the state commissioner for health, informed reporters that the “baby factory” where the infants were being sold was called Mother and Child Hospital and Maternity, and it was situated on a road near Tansian University in Umunya.
